Google+
I have not posted much lately, well at least not here. What I was posting here I now find myself posting on Google+. You can read my public posts at my G+ profile (I even have a handy redirect sean-long.com/+)
If/when I have longer posts that need more formatting than Google+ allows I will post here.
Also I’m now using sean-long.com as the domain for this blog, sm-l.com will now redirect...

The FBI stole an Instapaper server in an unrelated... →
Ouch! As an Instapaper user I am glad that Marco is itemizing all the user data that may now be in the FBI’s hands. Sony, Dropbox, etc. can learn a thing or two from Marco on keeping the customer in the loop.
instapaper:
One of Instapaper’s five leased servers was hosted at DigitalOne, a Swiss hosting company leasing blade servers from a Virginia datacenter. Early Tuesday morning, the FBI...

blogger fail
Back in this post I mentioned I was running this blog on Blogger, for the last month or two I have been using Tumblr instead. After Blogger’s problems this week I am glad I made the switch.
My other site IncisiveGeek still runs on Blogger. I am going to keep the sites using different hosts, I frankly don’t trust the stability of any platform anymore.

WTF? Apple
I have had my Verizon iPhone for almost 2 months now, today saw the release of the second software update in that time period, and yet again the Verizon iPhone is lingering on the iOS 4.2.x branch while all other iOS devices are on 4.3.x.
Apple squawks about Android fragmentation whenever they can so why don’t they fix their own damn fragmentation!
Err. rant off

mobile version of blogger site
Last night I was playing around with this site design and really wanted to have a mobile version, after a quick Google search I found that if you go to the Blogger dashboard via draft.blogger.com instead of blogger.com you can turn on a beta feature to show a mobile version to iPhone and Android device’s. The steps to enable are: - go to draft.blogger.com - click the ‘Settings’...

life span of mobile platforms
Horace Dediu over at asymco has the following graphic showing the the rise and fall of mobile platforms, nice. Of the platforms listed Android is the one I know will last a long while and WebOS is the one I really wish would take off. Eventually Apple will probably screw up iOS by wanting too much control. original article @asymco.com

Honda u3-x
Honda is using technology gained through the development of ASIMO to make a new type of indoor human transports. This reminds me of the SBU 2.0 by Focus Designs that I linked to last October but designed for fine indoor movements. Imagine one of these with an attached work surface and laptop, I would not have to leave my desk for most of the day… hmm not sure that is a good thing.

chrome grew some
Over on the Chromium Blog (Chromium is the open source version of Google’s Chrome web browser) they have announced their intention to drop the H.264 video codec support from the <video> tag in favor of putting more energy behind WebM and Theora. Talking about a ballzy move, a great show of support for open standards and open source. Like John Gruber I fear this could hurt battery life...

flee iPhoners, flee
Now that the Apple iPhone is going to finally be on Verizon I hope most of the iPhone users on AT&T flee. Not because I love Verizon more than AT&T (they both suck in their own special ways) but because I am an AT&T customer and I want more bandwidth freed up for my Nexus One. The Verizon iPhone does come with the extra feature of being a WiFi hotspot to share your connection with up...

Thanks Google
This evening when I got home from work I had a few packages (Christmas shopping via Amazon) waiting for me. I dug in and was surprised to find one was a Google Cr-48 laptop, yes! First impressions: The hardware is pretty nice, the first request would be a back-lit keyboard and physical mouse buttons but the hardware is just a means to test the software so I understand the limitations. I really...

Chrome OS, the future is here
I have always wanted to be able to go up to any computer and instantly have all my information available and how I last left it. The most obvious place to see such a system in action is on the Star Trek. Today Google showed off Chrome OS, which is basically a souped up browser that is the computer operating system and runs on a laptop. This combined with the Chrome browser and the Chrome Web Store...

Posterous was a cool blogging platform for awhile but it had too many little issues that just pissed me off, so I moved to what I know, Blogger (I also use it for Incisivegeek). I will keep the old site up for a bit while I finish moving things over.

android 2.1 & 2.2 platform percentage
The latest numbers are out from Google and as of November 1 2010 Android version 2.1 and 2.2 now make up over 75% of the Android platform (77% to be precise). The data can be found here: http://developer.android.com/resources/dashboard/platform-versions.html About time, hope 1.5 and 1.6 die off quickly so developers can dump some old code.

speedy chrome
I use Chrome for two reasons: 1) because it is so fast 2) the interface is almost identical across platforms. I switch between Linux/Mac/Windows machines multiple times a day. Ars Technica has a good web browser speed comparison giving some data to backup reason 1. The tests are done on current release desktop browsers and beta versions of the same browsers. In almost all the tests (release and...
